{"id":1564,"date":"2019-02-08T11:42:49","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T01:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/petaguy.info\/blog\/?post_type=glossary&#038;p=1564"},"modified":"2019-02-08T12:04:23","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T02:04:23","slug":"environmental-collapse","status":"publish","type":"glossary","link":"http:\/\/petaguy.info\/blog\/glossary\/environmental-collapse","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">An ecosystem is considered <b>collapsed<\/b> when its unique biological and other natural features are lost from all previous occurrences.Ecosystem collapse could be reversible and is thus not completely equivalent to <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Species extinction\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Species_extinction\">species extinction<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-challenging_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecosystem_collapse#cite_note-challenging-2\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Ecosystem collapse can lead to catastrophic declines of carrying capacity and mass extinction (known as <a title=\"Ecological collapse\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecological_collapse\">ecological collapse<\/a>), and can also pose existential risk to human populations.<sup id=\"cite_ref-KareivaCarranza2018_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Despite the strong empirical evidence, anticipating collapse is a complex problem. The collapse can happen when the ecosystem&#8217;s distribution decreases below a minimal sustainable size, or when key biotic processes and features disappear due to environmental degradation or disruption of biotic interactions. These different pathways to collapse can be used as criteria for estimating the risk of ecosystem collapse.
